Some archaeologists say that people have lived in the region of modern-day Oaxaca since 10,000 B.C., when nomadic groups roamed and dwelled in caves around the Central Valley.
The Zapotec and Mixtec communities first inhabited the Central Valley over 2,500 years ago. Their mountain top capital had over 60 structures including temples, ball courts, markets, and an astrological observatory. “Monte Alban” is considered by many the first great city of Mexico and central America, serving as their capital for 1,300 years, that was mysteriously abandoned by year 850 AD. The archeological ruins of “Monte Alban” are located 5 miles west of the house.
The land where City of Oaxaca and this home is located, was likely used as homesteads and farmland to support the pre-Colombian temples and communities of “Monte Alban” that reached 25,000 people at its peak.
When the Spanish arrived in the valley searching for gold in 1521 by the direction of Hernán Cortés, the modern-day city of Oaxaca was established. Soon after, the city was laid out in a traditional grid style pattern that still exists to this day. The area of La Noria was the southernmost part of town.
In the 1700’s the “Hacienda de La Noria” was established by the Spanish. The farmland produced wheat and sugar cane, water was supplied from the Sierra Norte mountains by an elaborate aqueduct system and waterwheels. La Noria means “waterwheel” in Spanish. In the late 1800’s the “Hacienda de La Noria” was owned by Porfirio Diaz, a native of Oaxaca and the President of Mexico for 31 years.
In the early 1900’s the farmland of “Hacienda de La Noria” was developed, the Gracida family purchased the plot of land where the house is located and built the very first home on the former hacienda. The family owned the property for over 100 years and used the rooms on the front of the house as a small general store.
In the early 2000’s the family converted the property to its current design and briefly ran it as a youth hostel with individual rooms for guests.
The property was purchased in 2020 by John and Rodrigo, establishing “Casa Ancestral de La Noria”. In the coming years they plan to completely renovate the property to a traditional Spanish Colonial home and opening a Bed and Breakfast in their private home.
